What is a prototype?

That question posed to different design firms will likely yield a different answer from each. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology describe the potential of rapid prototyping for architects. The Blog Prototyping Info describe, in general terms, the benefits of prototyping. Here at BC3 a prototype is the completion of a thought; an expression of an idea; a physical commitment to a concept. For us, a prototype is never a finished product; but rather a snapshot in time capturing the fluid development of one solution to a stated problem. For us a prototype is always 3 dimensional and has a specific materiality: plastic, steel, aluminum, wood or plywood. On the next post we will discuss our Fabrication Lab.
