Global Warming Potentials (GWPs) are a metric used to quantify the negative impact of various types gases on the environment relative to Carbon Dioxide, which is assigned a value of 1.0. Therefore if a gas is 10x as harmful as Carbon Dioxide its value would be 10. In Life Cycle Assessment the GWP impacts during the manufacture, transport, installation and end-of-life of building materials or their components can modeled, quantified and reported. Reduction of GWPs is a major goal in the design of buildings and can be achieved by making important decisions early in the design process.
